Edge, the browser is called to succeed the defunct Internet Explorer will not receive extensions before the end of this year. This was confirmed by Microsoft yesterday, although it was taken for granted after it was leaked that this support will not be included in the next update for Windows 10 highlight.

Safety is the reason given from Redmond to justify this delay in one of the functions that should make this more attractive face browser and equated users, thus the capabilities that already offer Chrome or Firefox, among others.

We are committed to provide customers with a personalized Web experience, so bring extensions for Microsoft Edge remains a high priority, the company confirmed to PCWorld. We are actively working to develop a model of extensions that make the browser safer and more reliable for our customers and hope to say more in a future update of Windows 10 in 2016.

Extensions in the crosshairs of cyber attackers

The concern for the safety of the extensions is not unique to Microsoft, but other Internet browsers like Firefox have already begun to take action on the matter.

For Mozilla, they have blocked (from version 41 of the browser) all unsigned extensions in order to prevent the rising tide of malicious scripts that take advantage of these add-ons access to many features of the equipment.

Edge, only used by 2.4 users

The extensions are one of the most common ways to customize the browsers and adapt to the particular needs of each person. Hence both Chrome and Firefox and Opera have these add-ons’, which Edge will continue a few more months at a disadvantage to its rivals.

For now, Edge is not getting massively convince users. If you stick to Netmarketshare data, only 2.4 computers running Edge, compared with 6.6 already uses Windows 10. Saving exceptional cases and assuming that all computers have Windows 10 preinstalled Edge (and in many cases set as the default browser), it can be inferred that just over one in three users of the new system uses Microsoft Edge, while the vast majority remains faithful to alternatives such as Firefox or Chrome.
